That used the idea that the magical regiments use standard RQ
battlemagic spells, coordinated though the regimental magic to give
additional range and affect multiple targets.

They're described as _armoured_ archers, so can do the protection
thing too. (Or if you prefer, perhaps the front rank also carries big
free-standing shields that can be set down on the ground, similar to
the Persion Immortals).

I think it's sensible for the guards to be archers - presumably the
magical support troops will be well behind the front line, so the
biggest danger to them will come from enemy fliers.
