That's how we use them in our wargaming; I think of the Comet Seers as an arcane MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System).  We depict  the spell effect as a hail of burning red rocks.

However, like Donald, I personally picture most lunar magical regiments as in general casting protective and morale-affecting magics on the battlefield, rather than "physical" offensive magic.

Strategically, there was a nice description, back in RQ2 days (Sandy?), of a Lunar Magical Regiment demoralizing a Sartarite unit, at night, at very long range.  Quite beleivable.

Lastly, I'm puzzled that magical units use archers for local protection; I'd have thought shielded troops, who could form a protective barrier whilst the mages get some magic going, might be more appropriate.
