I'm reading The Glorious Reascent of Yelm, and I came upon some passages that seemed to give a possible explanation for the origin of everyone's favorite Gloranthan species.
It's the reign of Emperor Kestinoros the Bird-lover, and a glacier is approaching.
"Kestinoros and his people gathered the sacred things of the ancient peoples, and they called the ancient spirits, and they adopted them into their families. In this way, the Feathered Ones were made, and they were able to withstand the terrible cold weather better than normal people. They became the leaders and the administrators of Kestinoros during his reign." (p.29)
"When Kestinoros died, at a ripe old age surrounded by those that he loved, his advisors met to decide what they should do. Some of the family leaders disagreed with everything everyone else said, and they were so unhappy that they determined to leave rather than let the Lordship of Rule leave their lineage. They left the assembly and gathered their families and belongings, then flew away to the south. Although almost half of them returned much later, in the first of the migrations, the rest were never seen again." (p.30)
Let's see: they have feathers, they're argumentative, and they fly away south, the direction of Dragon Pass. Could this be the ancestors of the ducks, and maybe even the keets?
There's a couple of reasons it wouldn't be. For one, I would imagine the Feathered Ones of Dara Happa would be birds nobler than ducks, such as hawks and eagles. But maybe the nobles of the emigrating group died, leaving only the lowly but well-adapted ducks. Or maybe they just devolved.
The Dara Happan emigration theory also doesn't fit very well with the origin story in Anaxials Roster, but it's not an exact contradiction either.
The ducks are an isolated segment of a larger race, the keets, who live in the East Isles. They were expelled from the mythical Ganderland, which the God Learners identified with Keetela (the ancient homeland of the keets)." (p.138)
If they didn't become the ducks, what did happen to the Dara Happan emigrants? Do they show up in other sources?
