Make all the special abilities like talk to animals innate magic. Why? Well that can be the focus of the campaign. She can discover that she has a 'unique' heritage, I dunno, take cues from the player as to what would be cool and develop it. Its a technique that I use for my players, take their backstory and spike it!
Also fudge the rules with the young-uns and with the big-uns too if it suits you. Story (and fun) is king. Jane said you must extend this coutesy to other players, and sure I would agree with that, but there is only one or two players here yes?

One of my players came to me and asked for a cloud sheep, to ride around. Of course it would need to be a big one, so the player is looking at using thepoints and getting a fairly ordinary one. What we decided on was that the new sidekick would be the subject of a quest.heroquest/adventure and I would design it, making it more advanced version.
Just a few ideas.
