  David:

They are the Gloranthan equivalent of Tolkein's Hobbits.

  Rob:

Possibly, but Greg added ducks to WBRM in order to get the game published for less, or so the legend goes. Hobbits have always been a central metaphor for Tolkein, whereas Greg largely ignores ducks.

  David:

The Shire was one of the few remaining pieces of ancient Beleriand,
yet they never appear in the Silmarillion.

  Rob:
Actually the Shire is in Eriador, which was not a part of Beleriand. Beleriand was the land west of Eriador that was destroyed and sunk below the waves in the Vala's war against Morgoth. Further, the Hobbits didn't inhabit the shire until sometime in the third age. Hence the hobbits kinship (distant) with the people of Gollum. Perhaps Bilbo and Frodo are related to Gollum, but that is off topic so we won't persue it here.

  Regards
  Rob
